In the first part of the article relating to esoteric Naples, we have described some of the main places of the historic center shrouded in mystery and, in some way, related to the dead world.
In addition to these places, there are others, spread out throughout the city, that have enigmatic stories and events.
Some of these places are famous all over the world, but only few know about myths and legends related to these places.
Famous for its suggestive location within the Gulf of Naples, the Castel Dell’Ovo owes its name, according to an ancient legend, to Virgilio, the Latin poet.
He would have hidden, in the building, a magical egg whose power was that of keep the entire fortress standing.
The breaking of the egg would have caused the collapse of the castle and others calamity on the city of Naples also.
Donna Anna Carafa, was resident of the palace and wife of the Duke of Medina Coeli.
She used to organize parties with Spanish and Neapolitan nobles at the end of 600.
In popular beliefs Donna Anna is often confused with the controversial Queen Giovanna D’Angiò because of her love for worldly life.
Carlo D’Angiò’s Daughter Giovanna used to meet young lovers, chosen from handsome fishermen, for her nights of passion inside the palace.
The next morning she getting rid of them making them fall down into the sea from the palace.
Legend has it that the souls of fishermen roam inside the residence.
The islet of Gaiola (whose name comes from the Latin cavea, meaning «small grotta ») is one of the smaller islands of Naples and is located just in front of the coast of Posillipo.
An abandoned villa stands on the islet of Gaiola. The fishermen of the area say that this villa is frequented by the ghost of a woman (in the 1920s), dead in mysterious circumstances, after discovering the betrayal of her husband.
