Capodimonte park covers 124 hectares. Access to the park is allowed by three gates: the Porta di Mezzo, the Porta di Miano and the Porta di Santa Maria dei Monti.
The park hosts a very wide variety of centuries-old trees such as oaks, holm oaks and chestnut trees.
Inside it is possible to find various buildings, each with its own history.
The Casino dei Principi residence for exemple, is currently a professional institute for processing ceramics but in the past it was the sons’s residence of Francesco I of Two Sicilies.
The royal palace of Capodimonte, was build in 1738 at the behest of Carlo di Borbone. It was the historic residence of the Bourbons of Naples. It also hosted the Bonapartes and Murats during the French decade.
The palace extends over two levels. On the first floor there are the Real Apartments.
The palace has a rectangular plan and develops around three courtyards.
The National Museum of Capodimonte is located inside the Royal Palace of Capodimonte. Officially inaugurated in 1957, it has hosted art works since 1758 (mainly paintings). It extends over three levels: on the ground floor there are services for visitors and some teaching rooms; on the first floor is the Galleria Farnese, the Borgia collection and the Royal Apartment; on the second floor there is the Neapolitan Gallery and the contemporary art section. There is also a mezzanine floor (between the first and second floors) which houses the Cabinet of Drawings and Prints and private nineteenth-century exhibitions.
